Facebook Says That Hackers Accessed The Data Of 29 Million Users

October 13, 2018 0

Facebook Says That Hackers Accessed The Data Of 29 Million Users

On Friday, Facebook said that hackers accessed the personal data of 29 million facebook users in a breach.

The company had initially said up to 50 million accounts were affected in a digital assault that misused a trio of programming blemishes to take "access tokens" that allow users to automatically log back into the platform..

“We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought,” Facebook VP of item administration Guy Rosen said in a conference call updating the investigation.

He said the hackers, whose identities are still a mystery, accessed the names, phone numbers and email addresses of 15 million users, he said.

For another 14 million individuals, the hacking was more damaging.

Facebook also said that cyber attackers accessed that data plus additional information including gender, religion, hometown, birth date and places they had recently “checked in” to as visiting.

Rosen also said that, No data was accessed in the accounts of the remaining one million people whose “access tokens” were stolen, according to Rosen.

The attack did not affect Facebook-possessed Messenger, Messenger Kids, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Pages, installments, outsider applications or promoting or designer accounts, the organization said.

Weakness in the code

He also said that Facebook engineers discovered a breach on September 25 and had it fixed after two days.

That breach purportedly identified with a "view as" highlight, depicted as a security device to give users a chance to see how their profiles look to other people. That capacity has been removed until further notice.

Facebook reset the 50 million records accepted to have been influenced, which means clients would need to sign back in using passwords.

The cyber attack was the latest privacy embarrassment for Facebook. Recall that earlier this year, millions of users had their personal data  hijacked by Cambridge Analytica, a political firm working for Donald Trump.

In Mark Zuckerberg's reaction, he said, “We face constant attacks from people who want to take over accounts or steal information around the world. While I’m glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place.”

Facebook said it made a prudent stride of resetting "access tokens" for another 40 million records which had gotten to the "view as" work.

According to Rosen, The hackers started the cyber attack on September 14 with 400,000 “seed accounts” they had a hand in or were otherwise close to, according to Rosen.

He said, "The hackers began with an arrangement of records they controlled directly, at that point moved to their friends, and their friends friends, and so on,  each time exploiting the weakness"

The exploit allowed hackers to steal copies of access tokens from accounts of “friends” by using the “view as” feature.

Once they had access to accounts, hackers had the ability to get into them and control them as though they were the real owner.

Hackers could have seen the last four digits of Mastercard information in individuals' records, with the rest covered up for security, however there was no sign that information was taken, said Facebook.

Rosen also said that they found no reason yet to trust hackers were in interested in individuals' data, rather that it showed up the mission was to collect access tokens from companions related with ruptured accounts.

He declined to discuss progress regarding figuring out who was behind the attack, saying Facebook had been asked by the FBI to remain quiet on the topic.

The California-based informal organization says it is coordinating with the FBI, US Federal Trade Commission, Irish Data Protection Commission and different experts in regards to the break.

Rosen said the FBI examination additionally restricted what he could reveal about what the hackers' true objective may have been, yet kept up that Facebook had "no motivation to trust this assault was identified with the mid-term elections" in the US.

Donald Trump Is The Biggest Political Spender On Facebook

Donald Trump Is The Biggest Political Spender On Facebook

New York Times has reported that America's President, Donald Trump's political action committee(PAC) has spent $274,000 on Facebook ads since May, making him the biggest political spender on Facebook. The second biggest spender is Planned Parenthood with $188,000
The numbers were laid out by New York University researchers who deciphered the data from Facebook, which created an archive for political ads that is publicly searchable, in May.
The Ad is seen by 37 million people, as reported by the researchers. New York Times talked about an Ad promoting Donald Trump's Nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.
I barely see Trump's ad though lol. Facebook has also started labeling political ads.
Remember that Facebook was slammed for allowing the spread of 'fake news' during the 2016 election, and also the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, the social network has been trying to make it's ad network more transparent. Currently, before you run a political campaign or 'issue' ads, you are required to get an authorisation from Facebook first.
The New York University researchers revealed the top 449 ad spenders on Facebook, 210 were on the left, while 124 were on the right, while 115 groups were politically neutral.

Britain To Fine Facebook Over Data Breach

July 11, 2018 0

Britain’s data regulator, on Wednesday revealed that it will fine Facebook half a million pounds for failing to protect user data, as part of its investigation into whether personal information was misused ahead of the Brexit referendum.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) began investigating the social media giant earlier this year, when evidence emerged that an app had been used to harvest the data of tens of millions of Facebook users worldwide.
In the worst ever public relations disaster for the social media giant, Facebook admitted that up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked by British consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica, which was working for US President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Cambridge Analytica, which also had meetings with the Leave.EU campaign ahead of Britain’s EU referendum in 2016, denies the accusations and has filed for bankruptcy in the United States and Britain.
“In 2014 and 2015, the Facebook platform allowed an app… that ended up harvesting 87 million profiles of users around the world that was then used by Cambridge Analytica in the 2016 presidential campaign and in the referendum,” Elizabeth Denham, the information commissioner, revealed to BBC radio.
Wednesday’s ICO report said: “The ICO’s investigation concluded that Facebook contravened the law by failing to safeguard people’s information.”
Without detailing how the information may have been used, it said the company had “failed to be transparent about how people’s data was harvested by others”.
The ICO added that it plans to issue Facebook with the maximum available fine for breaches of the Data Protection Act, an equivalent of $660,000 or 566,000 euros.
Because of the timing of the breaches, the ICO said it was unable to impose penalties that have since been introduced by the European General Data Protection, which would cap fines at 4.0 percent of Facebook’s global turnover.
In Facebook’s case this would amount to around $1.6 billion (1.4 billion euros).
“In the new regime, they would face a much higher fine. We are at a crossroads. Trust and confidence in the integrity of our democratic processes risk being disrupted because the average voter has little idea of what is going on behind the scenes. New technologies that use data analytics to micro-target people give campaign groups the ability to connect with individual voters. But this cannot be at the expense of transparency, fairness and compliance with the law.” Denham said
In May, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg, apologised to the European Parliament for the “harm” caused.
European Union Justice Commissioner, Vera Jourova welcomed the ICO report.
In her words, “It shows the scale of the problem and that we are doing the right thing with our new data protection rules. Everyone from social media firms, political parties and data brokers seem to be taking advantage of new technologies and micro-targeting techniques with very limited transparency and responsibility towards voters. We must change this fast as no-one should win elections using illegally obtained data.We will now assess what can we do at the EU level to make political advertising more transparent and our elections more secure.”
The European Union, in May, launched strict new data-protection laws allowing regulators to fine companies up to 20 million euros ($24 million) or four percent of annual global turnover.
But the ICO said because of the timing of the incidents involved in its inquiry, the penalties were limited to those available under previous legislation.
The next phase of the ICO’s work is expected to be concluded by the end of October.
Erin Egan, chief privacy officer at Facebook, disclosed: “We have been working closely with the ICO in their investigation of Cambridge Analytica, just as we have with authorities in the US and other countries. We’re reviewing the report and will respond to the ICO soon.”
The British fine comes as Facebook faces a potential hefty compensation bill in Australia, where litigation funder IMF Bentham said that it had lodged a complaint with regulators over the Cambridge Analytica breech, thought to affect some 300,000 users in Australia.
IMF investment manager Nathan Landis revealed to The Australian newspaper that, most awards for privacy breaches ranged between Aus$1,000 and Aus$10,000 (US$750-$7,500).
This means a potential compensation bill of between Aus$300 million and Aus$3 billion.

Twitter Suspends More Than 70 Million Accounts In Two Months

July 08, 2018 0

Reports revealed that, Twitter Inc. have suspended more than one million accounts within two months to reduce the flow of misinformation on the platform. Twitter and other social media platforms such as Facebook, have been under scrutiny by United States lawmakers and international regulators for doing too little to prevent the spread of false content.
The company have been taking different measures such as deleting user accounts, introducing updates and actively monitoring content to help users avoid being victims to fake content. Twitter suspended more than 70 million accounts in May and June, and the pace has continued in July, the media reported on Friday, revealing data it obtained.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said, “It’s hard to believe that 70 million accounts were affected when Twitter has only 336 million monthly active users (MAU)”
Twitter’s MAU is expected to grow nearly three per cent to 337.06 in the second quarter, according to the media.

"If the 70 million were mostly active accounts, the affected accounts would have been “screaming bloody murder”, added the analyst.

Facebook Eases Ban On Cryptocurrency Ads

June 27, 2018 0

The world's leading giant social media, Facebook said on Tuesday that it was easing a ban on ads for cryptocurrencies while keeping a prohibition on initial coin offerings to raise assets.
The move comes five months after the leading social network said it was banning all ads related to cryptocurrencies like bitcoin as a way to reduce scams.
To place ads on Facebook for cryptocurrencies, companies will need to be pre-approved and offer proof they have licenses or are traded on a public exchange, the company said.
“Given these restrictions, not everyone who wants to advertise will be able to do so,” Facebook product management director Rob Leathern said in a statement.
“But we’ll listen to feedback, look at how well this policy works and continue to study this technology so that, if necessary, we can revise it over time.
Facebook and other online platforms began cracking down on ads for crypto-related businesses amid concerns over fraud in the burgeoning and largely unregulated sector where currencies can see huge swings.
Fraud is common in the world of red-hot digital currencies such as bitcoin.
Earlier this year, the US Securities and Exchange Commission shut down an initial coin offering by a Texas company called AriseBank.
AriseBank was accused of relying on celebrity endorsers such as boxer Evander Holyfield and social media to cheat investors out of $600 million of its goal of $1 billion for a currency it called “AriseCoin.”
Initial coin offerings — used by some startups to raise billions of dollars — still won’t be able to advertise on Facebook.
Twitter, Google and Snapchat have announced similar bans.
The British government early this year called for global regulation of controversial virtual currencies like bitcoin.
Bitcoin and similar forms of virtual cash are independent of governments and banks and use blockchain technology, where encrypted digital coins are created by supercomputers.
The virtual currency is not regulated by any central bank but is instead overseen by a community of users who try to guard against counterfeiting.

Facebook Stops The Production Of Drones For Internet Delivery

June 27, 2018 0

Facebook is putting a halt to a program launched in 2014 to build a fleet of drones that could deliver internet to underserved areas of the world.
The huge social network said it has not abandoned the idea of using high-altitude aircraft to connect remote areas of the globe, but would concentrate its efforts with manufacturing partners.
Facebook will close its facility in Bridgwater, southwest England, which has been working on the solar-powered Aquila drone, according to a statement late Tuesday.
“When we started the Aquila program back in 2014, very few companies were involved in this area,” said Facebook engineering director Yael Maguire.
But in the past four years a number of aerospace companies have been investing in the technology, he noted.
“Given these developments, we’ve decided not to design or build our own aircraft any longer, and to close our facility in Bridgwater.”
Maguire said Facebook would work with partners including the European consortium Airbus on high altitude platform station (HAPS) connectivity “and on the other technologies needed to make this system work, like flight control computers and high-density batteries.”
Facebook had touted the Aquila program as one of several aimed at bringing the internet to remote areas and last year announced a successful second test flight.
Google, meanwhile, has its own Project Loon which aims to deliver connectivity to remote areas using high-altitude balloons.

Man Born Without A Penis Set To Lose His Virginity Through Bionic Manhood But His Erection Will Last 10 Days

June 27, 2018 0

A 44-year-old man who was born without a penis and has never had sex is about to have sex for the first time thanks to his new £50,000 bionic manhood.

Andrew Wardle has long waited for this day. He has suffered a lot because of his lack of a penis and was once punched in the face by a woman when she learnt he was missing his manhood.

Andrew was born with bladder exstrophy, a rare birth defect that means the organ, that usually sits inside the pelvis, is exposed. Although he has testicles, the condition means he has no penis. Andrew has undergone a string of operations over the last four years to build his appendage. On Friday, Andrew, who lives in Greater Manchester, had the final part of his penile implant fitted at London's University Hospital.
But before Andrew can find out if the surgery has been a success, he will have to walk around with an erection for 10 days and faces another six weeks until he can put it into action with girlfriend Fedra Fabian.

"I'm very excited that I can move on now," he told MailOnline.
"But I think having sex for the first time is more of a big deal for everyone else than it is for me. I've spent 44 years without a penis and I've coped with not having sex for all that time. It will take me a while to get in the swing of things."
He added: "Of course, I'm looking forward to it."
Andrew hopes to have children one day, something he thought would never be possible.
He added: "I'm very aware that I am half-human half-robot at the moment. I'm like the bionic man. I will even be able to perform if I am drunk."

Netflix Fires Chief Of Communications For Using The N-word During Staff Meeting

June 24, 2018 0

Jonathan Friedland, the chief communications officer for Netflix has been sacked from the company after he used the N-word during a staff meeting. He had been with the company for six years.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sent a company-wide email explaining his firing on Friday. Friedland, a former Disney executive, first joined Netflix in February 2011 as vp global corporate communications, and was promoted to the top comms role the following year.

Friedland in a statement said, "I’m leaving Netflix after seven years. Leaders have to be beyond reproach in the example we set and unfortunately I fell short of that standard when I was insensitive in speaking to my team about words that offend in comedy. I feel awful about the distress this lapse caused to people at a company I love and where I want everyone to feel included and appreciated. I feel honored to have built a brilliant and diverse global team and to have been part of this collective adventure in building the world’s leading entertainment service.”

The shake-up comes as Netflix, led by Hastings, ended the first quarter with 125 million subscribers worldwide, with expectations to add 6.2 million in the second quarter. Just last week, the company’s shares closed 3 percet higher to a new record of $404.98, even as the broader markets fell.

A replacement for Friedland has yet to be named.

Read the full memo sent out to Netflix employees about Friedland’s firing below...

I’ve made a decision to let go of Jonathan Friedland. Jonathan contributed greatly in many areas, but his descriptive use of the N-word on at least two occasions at work showed unacceptably low racial awareness and sensitivity, and is not in line with our values as a company.  The first incident was several months ago in a PR meeting about sensitive words. Several people afterwards told him how inappropriate and hurtful his use of the N-word was, and Jonathan apologised to those that had been in the meeting.
We hoped this was an awful anomaly never to be repeated.  Three months later he spoke to a meeting of our Black Employees @ Netflix group and did not bring it up, which was understood by many in the meeting to mean he didn’t care and didn’t accept accountability for his words.  The second incident, which I only heard about this week, was a few days after the first incident; this time Jonathan said the N-word again to two of our Black employees in HR who were trying to help him deal with the original offense.
The second incident confirmed a deep lack of understanding, and convinced me to let Jonathan go now.  As I reflect on this, at this first incident, I should have done more to use it as a learning moment for everyone at Netflix about how painful and ugly that word is, and that it should not be used. I realize that my privilege has made me intellectualize or otherwise minimize race issues like this. I need to set a better example by learning and listening more so I can be the leader we need.
Depending on where you live or grew up in the world, understanding and sensitivities around the history and use of the N-word can vary. Debate on the use of the word is active around the world (example) as the use of it in popular media like music and film have created some confusion as to whether or not there is ever a time when the use of the N-word is acceptable. For non-Black people, the word should not be spoken as there is almost no context in which it is appropriate or constructive (even when singing a song or reading a script).
There is not a way to neutralize the emotion and history behind the word in any context. The use of the phrase “N-word” was created as a euphemism, and the norm, with the intention of providing an acceptable replacement and moving people away from using the specific word. When a person violates this norm, it creates resentment, intense frustration, and great offense for many. Our show Dear White People covers some of this ground.  Going forward, we are going to find ways to educate and help our employees broadly understand the many difficult ways that race, nationality, gender identity and privilege play out in society and our organization. We seek to be great at inclusion, across many dimensions, and these incidents show we are uneven at best.
We have already started to engage outside experts to help us learn faster.  Jonathan has been a great contributor and he built a diverse global team creating awareness for Netflix, strengthening our reputation around the world, and helping make us into the successful company we are today. Many of us have worked closely with Jonathan for a long time, and have mixed emotions. Unfortunately, his lack of judgment in this area was too big for him to remain. We care deeply about our employees feeling safe and supported at Netflix.  Much of this information will be in the press shortly. But any detail not in the press is confidential to employees.
- Reed.

Teens Are Getting Bored Of Facebook As The Social Network Ages

June 24, 2018 0

17 year old Manon has a Facebook account but to connect with her friends she turns to other social networks like Instagram or Snapchat.
“I don’t use it to post status updates or personal information,” the San Francisco teen says.
Manon maintains her Facebook account to be able to stay in touch with the large number of users on the huge social network and as a “gateway” to log into other apps.
“But to communicate with my friends, it’s Snapchat,” the high schooler said.
“Everyone says Facebook is out of date. I think it’s because all the parents are on Facebook.”
As Facebook has grown into a network of more than two billion people globally it has lost its lustre for younger users who made up a core base.
While Facebook has become one of the world’s most valuable and powerful companies, it’s no longer seen as a cool destination for teens, who are turning to Snapchat and Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.
According to a Pew Research Center survey this year, 51 per cent of US teens ages 13 to 17 use Facebook, compared with 72 per cent for Instagram and 69 per cent who are on Snapchat. The survey found 85 per cent used the Google video sharing service YouTube.
The landscape has shifted since a 2014-15 Pew survey which found Facebook leading other social networks with 71 per cent of the teen segment.
“The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago,” said Pew researcher Monica Anderson.
“Back then, teens’ social media use mostly revolved around Facebook. Today, their habits revolve less around a single platform.”
The breakup of teens and Facebook was occurring before the latest scandals which have hit Facebook over hijacked user data and propagation of misinformation.
According to a Forrester Research survey 34 per cent of US online youth view Facebook “as a website for old people and parents.”
“US online youth regard Facebook as utility, while other networks that deliver niche value steal attention from Facebook’s broad platform,” said Forrester’s Anjali Lai in a research note.
“Established social networks face an image problem.”
A separate report by the research firm eMarketer came to a similar conclusion, estimating that Facebook would lose some two million US users under age 24 this year.
Facebook remains king of the social media space and is still growing, though more slowly than in past years.
Its profit in the first quarter of 2018 jumped 63 per cent from a year ago to $5 billion, and total revenues increased 49 per cent to $11.97 billion.
And the California company has been moving to become more diversified, with its “family” of apps that include Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, and virtual reality gear from its Oculus division.
To connect with younger audiences, Facebook has launched a parentally controlled Messenger Kids app for those too young to have their own Facebook account, and recently expanded that to Peru and Canada.
Facebook is also moving to challenge YouTube, and potentially other services like Netflix, with original video on its own platform and on Instagram, which now has one billion users.
With 2.2 billion users, Facebook still has a big lead over Snapchat, with 191 million users at the end of March, and Twitter with 336 million.
“Snapchat has a lot of growing to do before it can really be a huge challenger to Facebook,” said Debra Williamson, social media analyst at eMarketer.
But the trends show services like Instagram and Snapchat — which has grown beyond its original offering of disappearing messages — have become the new, cool place for young smartphone users.
With Snapchat, “you can add animation, special effects, that’s what’s interesting for my generation,” said 16-year-old Charlotte, another San Francisco high school student.
Manon said she also likes Instagram because it is “more about creativity, people who make music or photography can post what they do.”

Innoson Reacts To False Statement Against GTBank

June 13, 2018 0

Innoson Motors, in a shocking twist to its court case with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has reacted to a false statement in its recent declaration of victory against the bank.

This was stated in a recent statement released by the spokesman, Cornelius Osigwe, in which automobile entrepreneur recanted an initial tweet stating that the Supreme Court had ordered GTBank to pay the chairman of Innoson Motors, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, 14 billion naira within 14 days – a statement that caused a social media storm and reactions among customers of the bank and other Nigerians.

In a statement released by Innoson, the spokesman claimed that “there have been a lot of misinterpretations about the press release published by Innoson Group on the decision of the Supreme Court. The caption was a slight distortion of the information. When the information came to our notice, we had to correct the error made by the staff of the agency managing our social media accounts. We apologise for that misleading information”.

Records of the court proceedings also showed no such ruling. Instead, the Supreme Court had directed both parties, Innoson and GTBank, to return to the Court of Appeal, Enugu Judicial Division, for a hearing on GTBank’s appeal scheduled for tomorrow, 14 June, 2018.

As facts became clearer to the public, the embattled businessman silently deleted the false tweet from the company’s Twitter account.

GTBank had also advised the public that Innoson’s claims were “false, mischievous and malicious”, emphasizing that there was no directive or order issued by the Supreme Court of Nigeria to the Bank to make any payment to any of its debtor customers, calling for Nigerians to disregard the statement in its entirety.
